Receipt for loan from Thomas Jones, 1684 June 10.

One page holograph document in the form of a receipt for a loan of £200 to John Dunton from Thomas Jones of Acton, Middlesex to finance Dunton's bookselling business; includes signatures of witnesses Obad[iah?] Marryat and Mary Freeman. The document is pasted down to the inside recto page of a paper folder; an engraved portait of Dunton by John Swaine after a work by Michael van der Gucht is pasted down as a frontispiece.

English stationer and bookseller. After serving his apprenticeship, Dunton started his own bookselling business in London around 1684; he went to New England the next year, returning in 1686. He then opened a new bookshop in London and later sold books in Dublin. Dunton was himself the author of satires and political pamphlets as well as his Life and errors of John Dunton (1705).
